Getting My Own Life in Order: My Personal Organizing Journey

Wondering if it’s too late to get organized? It’s not. You don’t have to be “born organized” to find systems that work for you. I’m proof of that.

How My Organizing Journey Began

I first realized I needed an organization system back in school. Remembering which assignments were due, what I needed to bring home, and what to study felt overwhelming without one. My solution? A sticky note on the front of my agenda planner every single day.

Through middle school and high school, that simple planner system was my lifeline. While many classmates abandoned theirs after the first week, I used mine daily. It became my secret weapon for staying on track and reducing stress.

Leveling Up: Organization in College

In college, the workload grew—more classes, more assignments, more moving parts. I upgraded to a color-coded system: each class had its own folder, pen, and highlighter. I’d write assignments in that class’s pen and highlight upcoming exams in the matching color.

That straightforward method helped me handle a double major, two capstone projects, and planning my wedding—all in my senior year.

From Paper to Digital Tools

When I entered the working world, my organization methods evolved again. For years I loved my paper planner and colored pens, but motherhood brought a need for more flexibility—and there’s only so much White-Out in the world.

I switched to a digital planner on my iPad, and today, as a mom of two and a full-time Personal Assistant, I rely on Google Calendar and Notion to manage both home and work. (Stay tuned for a future post on exactly how I use them.)

A Moment That Stuck

One of my favorite moments came when a professor introduced me at a conference by saying, “Erica is the level of organizing I aspire to.” I was a little embarrassed at the time, but those words stuck with me—and helped inspire me to start my own organizing business.

The Truth About Getting Organized

Here’s what I’ve learned:

  • No two people are the same, and neither are their organizing systems.
  • What works now may not work forever—and that’s okay.
  • The key is to give yourself grace and be willing to adjust.

I’m here to help others find the systems that fit their lives, whether that’s paper planners, digital tools, or a mix of both. Because the real goal is peace in your spaces—and the freedom that comes with it.
